Wireless Restrictions

Sources of wireless interference

One of the most important things to keep in mind when purchasing or deploying equipment that uses any type of wireless communication is interference.

Most equipment that operates in the 5 GHz range will not interfere with other 5 GHz equipment of a different type. For example, 5 GHz cordless phones will not interfere with 802.11n wireless access points.

Devices operating in the 2.4 GHz range do not share this benefit. Any device operating in this range has the freedom to use any or all for the band as it sees fit. A 2.4 GHz microwave oven will interfere with your 2.4 GHz cordless phone, your bluetooth headset, 802.11b/g wireless access points, most wireless microphone devices, etc.

The use of most, but not all, devices operating at MSU on the 2.4 GHz range is prohibited by University policy. Bluetooth, microwave ovens, and other very short range, low power devices are the only exceptions. Wireless cameras, wireless headsets, wireless phones, and almost any other 2.4 GHz device, including wireless networking devices, are prohibited by MSU policy External.

Radio frequencies used by 802.11

Please avoid the use of devices that operate in the following frequency ranges.

  • 2.40 - 2.485 GHz
  • 5.18 - 5.6 GHz
  • 5.68 - 5.86 GHz
