DHCP

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP External) is used to obtain an IP address for hosts connecting to the Missouri State network. In almost all cases this is transparent to the user and everything works by default. IP addresses are assigned on a temporary basis and there is no guarantee that a host will keep an IP address it has received in the past.

DHCP Reservations

If a host (typically a server) requires an IP address that is guaranteed not to change, then a DHCP reservation should be requested.  To request a reservation, email Networking@MissouriState.edu or contact a Networking staff member listed on our Personnel page.

Please provide the following information in the request:

  • Server administrator
  • Contact information if it is not already on file:
    • E-mail address
    • Primary phone number
    • Secondary phone number
  • Current IP address
    or
  • MAC address and building
  • Brief explanation of the need for a reservation for this host

If the host already has an IP address, it will need to get the new one.  This can be achieved by either rebooting the host or performing a release and renew (run ipconfig /? at a Command Prompt for help).  Remember that releasing the IP address will drop a Remote Desktop session so it is advised to do this from the console.
